In January 2019 I joined the All Souls Unitarian Church’s Sienna Project trip to Chichicastenengo, Guatemala to build a school for students in a poor Mayan village in the mountains outside of Chichi. The Sienna project was started by my father-in-law in 2006 after my daughter, Sienna, died suddenly from myocarditis. This was the twelfth school build by the Sienna Project and the second trip hosted by All Souls. The experience was extremely moving for me being able to witness love in action and see first hand how my daughter’s legacy was benefiting so many people. Traveling not just as a tourist but being able to work together with the local villagers, visit their homes, attend a local festival and see the richness of their tight knit community was an unforgettable and life changing experience.
