Artful Portrait and Family Photography

Tulsa, Oklahoma

I approach all my photography subjects with an eye for artful and compelling composition. I like to play with perspective, capture details that make the viewer see the extraordinary in the ordinary, and of course I’m always searching for that magical light that brings the photo to the next level!

I offer down-to-earth, documentary style photography and portraiture for people who are interested in capturing organic moments that will reflect their lives as they truly are. Whether you are booking a one hour session or a full day in the life shoot my goal is to create a relaxed, fun and collaborative experience where everyone can feel at ease to be themselves. It is important to me that you end up with photos that you love, that you can hold in your hand, see on your walls, or in a special album, and they can remind you of the sometimes chaotic, often ordinary, but always love-filled moments that make up your life.

“Anitra’s Eye is aptly named, for seen through the eyes of Anitra Lavanhar the space around her becomes alive. Angle, perspective, depth, color, light, imagination can summon the sublime from the mundane. Her images are graceful, playful, evocative, and often soulful. Simply put, she is an artist of the first order.”

About the Photographer

I like to say that I am an “anthro-photographer” combining my backgrounds in art and anthropology, fueled by a lifelong curiosity of the world around me, the people in it, and their stories. My lens is wide. I am drawn to the urban and industrial landscapes in my home city of Tulsa, OK. The character and history these places hold are rich in texture and mystery. I also love traveling and exploring new cultures and landscapes. From wide-angle landscapes and architectural scenes, to the close-up details captured with a macro lens my goal is to compose a frame, a moment, that is both familiar and unique, thought provoking and inspiring. I also enjoy street photography and creative portraiture.

I love to share the many benefits I have experienced by deepening my skills of observation throughout my photography journey and therefore deepening the experience of the richness and gratitude for life.  I teach a variety of photography classes and workshops to adults and youth, and lead photography walking tours in Tulsa.

I am also married, a mother of two children, 20 and 12, and an instructor of White Crane Silat, an Indonesian martial art.

Photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place. I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see, and everything to do with the way you see them.
